With a record-breaking US Grand Prix and the debut of the Miami Grand Prix, all America needs is another home-grown talent to make it onto the F1 grid.

That dream seems to be one step closer to reality, as  RACER  reports that McLaren has signed a testing and development deal with IndyCar star Colton Herta!

The deal will reportedly see him combine F1 tests in pre-2021 cars, alongside his current IndyCar drive with Andretti Autosport. McLaren could also choose to run him in an FP1 session if they wish, as F1’s new rule means teams have to run rookies in at least two FP1s this season.

The youngest winner in the series’ history, 21-year-old Herta took his first of six victories so far in only his third race start and finished third in the 2020 drivers’ standings.

He’s not the only IndyCar talent McLaren have got on their books, having given Arrow McLaren SP driver Pato O’Ward his F1 testing debut in the post-season Abu Dhabi Young Drivers’ Test at the end of last year.

Could this be the next step Andretti are taking to potentially joining F1? Having previously attempted to buy Alfa Romeo last season, 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti and father of Andretti Autosport’s boss Michael, said the team could be on the grid as soon as 2024.
