In just over two hours, Sebastian Vettel went from a pole position contender to a shock Q1 exit in Canada – his message over the team radio pretty much summed up the mood…
During FP3, we took a trip down memory lane as we watched Vettel battle it out for the top spot with Alpine’s Fernando Alonso.
However, when it got to qualifying, Aston Martin’s pace completely disappeared, as both cars were eliminated from qualifying in Q1.
As he returned to the pits, Vettel briefly forgot his radio was on and shouted, “How the **** did we get it so wrong!?” before apologising to the team.
Speaking to F1 TV, Vettel was frustrated with the result and still had no idea where his FP3 pace had gone. He said, “it’s probably still somewhere, but that was a surprise.
“I had very low grip given how the car felt. It isn’t a surprise that we were that slow, but obviously, we didn’t change anything from this morning – not much.
He added, “It was shocking, so very difficult to drive, lots of sliding, very poor rear so we need to have a look as something clearly didn’t work.”
Vettel will start Sunday’s race in 16th but remains “optimistic” about the team’s chances to score points.
Good luck Seb!
